MATCH REPORT Ladies 1 vs Abingdon 1
This week, the Ladies 1s had a mid-table match against Abingdon 1s. We knew they were a tough side with a strong keeper after scraping a 1-0 victory from them in our away fixture before Christmas.
The game started slowly, with both teams showing low energy levels. Wootton had the upper hand, keeping most of the play in Abingdon’s half, but as both teams started to find their feet, the opposition made some quick breaks towards our D.
Wootton did well to protect the goal, with a few mid-air, goal-line saves from CBs Steph and Abby, but Abingdon’s persistence gave them the upper hand after a 4th or 5th rebound attempt. This took us into halftime 1-0 down.
We had a quick halftime talk and were back on the pitch swiftly, aiming to use our subs more and keep our energy levels high.
The forwards started to make some strong attacks, with shots coming off but being kept out well by the young GK. After a few swings under her belt, Frankie bombed into the D, fluffing the shot but creating a perfect pass to Easton, who took control and banged the ball in to level the score.
Both attacking lines continued to create chances. Wootton earned a barrage of short corners, but Abingdon hit harder, collecting a P-flick and a second goal.
The Wanderers didn’t give in, but after endless shots on goal, we couldn’t quite break through the opposition defense. The final score was 2-1 to the visitors.
