MATCH REPORT Ladies 2 vs Oxford University 4
On a very warm midday, under beautiful sunshine on home turf, The ladies 2s faced off against Oxford university 4s. The girls were aware of the challenges ahead, having experienced a tough reverse fixture.
From the outset, Wanderers started strong, demonstrating impressive marking and effective off-the-ball-work. However, the teams defence was put to test as Oxford uni began to apply pressure. An overload of players swarmed the D, manoeuvring around the Wanderers’ defence to score the first goal of the game, putting the girls on the back foot.
Despite the setback, the girls worked tirelessly to regain possession, but shortly after, oxford uni struck again with a powerful shot that found the backboard leading to a 2-0 deficit at half time for Wootton.
The girls second half began similarly to the first, with high work rates from both teams. Wootton managed to find some spaces in midfield, displaying a determined attitude, but were dispossessed by a strong Oxford uni side. Taking advantage of the situation, Oxford scooped the ball over the defence and into the net, extending their lead to 3-0.
Midfielder Jess then showcased her skills by weaving through the opposition and earning the team a well-deserved penalty corner. Their newly worked routine came tantalisingly close to scoring but narrowly missed the goal.
However, Wootton intensified their efforts utilising their strengths in passing and movement to push forward. Unfortunately, Oxfords solid defence held firm against the girls’ advances.
With the sun beating down and tired legs, Oxford uni managed to capitalise and score two goals in quick succession sealing the match with a final score of 5-0 in favour of the visitors.
