Wootton wanderers Ladies 2s faced off against the well-structured Abingdon 2s eager to continue their momentum following a successful double-winning weekend. The girls kicked off the day with a strong warm up, proving their readiness. From the start of the match, Wootton displayed dominance, effectively using every player whilst maintaining possession and control.
Wootton’s defence held firm, preventing any scoring threats whilst the midfielders made some good runs into space to strive forward up the pitch.
After 35 minutes the first half concluded and the score remained unchanged. Following a passionate team talk at half time, wanderers emerged with renewed confidence and a desire to succeed in the second half. They began with the same intensity, pressing hard on Abingdon and implementing their training strategies to pass effectively round the opposition.
The breakthrough came when Amie skilfully beat her defender and fired the ball into the bottom corner, giving Wootton a crucial 1-0 lead. With this small advantage, Wootton knew they had to remain focused.
They kept their composure and continued to play with confidence. The work rate from every player was commendable, reflecting their commitment to the game. However a slight lapse in marking allowed Abingdon to capitalise and score an equaliser, bringing the score to 1-1.
Wanderers fought valiantly to regain the lead, coming agonisingly close on multiple occasions. Despite their relentless efforts, time ran out and the girls had to settle for a hard-worked draw.
